Summary

In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton began an ambitious project -to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City。 The photos he took and the accompanying interviews became the blog Humans of New York。 In the first three years, his audience steadily grew from a few hundred to over one million。 In 2013, his book Humans of New York, based on that blog, was published and immediately catapulted to the top of the NY Times Bestseller List。 It has appeared on that list for over twenty-five weeks to date。 The appeal of HONY has been so great that in the course of the next year Brandon's following increased tenfold to, now, over 12 million followers on Facebook。 In the summer of 2014, the UN chose him to travel around the world on a goodwill mission that had followers meeting people from Iraq to the Ukraine to Mexico City via the photos he took。

Now, Brandon is back with the follow up to Humans of New York that his loyal followers have been waiting for: Humans of New York: Stories。 Ever since Brandon began interviewing people on the streets of NY, the dialogue he's had with them has increasingly become as in-depth, intriguing and moving as the photos themselves。 Humans of New York: Stories presents a whole new group of humans, complete with stories that delve deeper and surprise with greater candour。 Let Brandon Stanton and the people he's photographed astonish you。

Love seeing the evolution of HONY, from the first book to this one and then to Humans (2020) - my favorite。

I started this book a few months ago but gave up on it half way。 I found myself thinking about this quote very often: “When you yell at someone, who hears it more: you or them? You’re only hurting yourself by getting angry…”Every time when I feel angry and I want to scream at someone I don’t because at the end of the day the problem is mine to deal with not to project onto others, and this quote helped me realize that。 I came back to this book just yesterday because I felt the need to indulge in I started this book a few months ago but gave up on it half way。 I found myself thinking about this quote very often: “When you yell at someone, who hears it more: you or them? You’re only hurting yourself by getting angry…”Every time when I feel angry and I want to scream at someone I don’t because at the end of the day the problem is mine to deal with not to project onto others, and this quote helped me realize that。 I came back to this book just yesterday because I felt the need to indulge in the knowledge of others (being that I have been telling myself that I am not enough and I have a really hard life)。 Others have it worse than me, why is it that I feel that way about myself when I basically have things handed to me? Maybe it’s because I have things handed to me and don’t feel the need to try。 One day I will be leaving this little town I live in and moving to New York to be with my crowd of people, and learn to live on my own, even if I have to struggle but i’ll be on my own。 。。。more

I bought this book at the height of the craze。 I was an avid follower of this project when it first started and throughout the years I saw many spin-offs of this series, in many cities and countries。 But I did not buy this for myself; it was a birthday present for my dad。 Now, buying a gift for my dad is a hit or miss。 He has sweaters I have gifted that he shelved somewhere in the closet but I digress。 This present, this book, he devoured。 He isn't a social media person so he had no idea what ab I bought this book at the height of the craze。 I was an avid follower of this project when it first started and throughout the years I saw many spin-offs of this series, in many cities and countries。 But I did not buy this for myself; it was a birthday present for my dad。 Now, buying a gift for my dad is a hit or miss。 He has sweaters I have gifted that he shelved somewhere in the closet but I digress。 This present, this book, he devoured。 He isn't a social media person so he had no idea what about Humans of New York or how big of a social phenomena it had become but he connected with the stories in the book, he annotated them, and has his favourites bookmarked。 And I think that speaks for itself。 。。。more

Humans of New York — one of the best books I have read, with real stories of real humans going through this life。 It felt like a gift to hear them, what they’ve been through, what they are going through, and even where they are headed。 Some a line or two, some a whole paragraph but whatever snippets they have offered the page was worth listening to。 Definitely recommend。 💛💫Go listen to somebody today。 That matters so much。 xx

Everyone has their own story。 Everybody has their own journey。 This's a great book that could make me be in every mood。 Not only the meaningful stories of diversified people in New York, but the amazing pictures could also portray through this book miraculously。 Everyone has their own story。 Everybody has their own journey。 This's a great book that could make me be in every mood。 Not only the meaningful stories of diversified people in New York, but the amazing pictures could also portray through this book miraculously。 。。。more

The world is such a big, crazy place, but humans can be really similar wherever you go。 This photo project/blog/whatever it is does well to remind us that。

It's just so beautiful, raw。。。。and HUMAN。 Stories of triumph, despair, loneliness, discovery, perseverance, love, loss, invention。 A real world of transparency and emotion, with NYC, a city that has a special place in my heart, as the backdrop。 This book is a feast。 It's just so beautiful, raw。。。。and HUMAN。 Stories of triumph, despair, loneliness, discovery, perseverance, love, loss, invention。 A real world of transparency and emotion, with NYC, a city that has a special place in my heart, as the backdrop。 This book is a feast。 。。。more

The title is Humans of NY, but really the stories shared by the subjects contain experiences/thoughts/struggles/emotions/happiness shared by all humans。 Many of the stories shared are so intimate that you would never share it with anyone but a total stranger that you're never going to see again。 The honesty and display of the human condition is what makes it so beautiful。 Definitely some wisdom to be gained from the stories in this book。 The title is Humans of NY, but really the stories shared by the subjects contain experiences/thoughts/struggles/emotions/happiness shared by all humans。 Many of the stories shared are so intimate that you would never share it with anyone but a total stranger that you're never going to see again。 The honesty and display of the human condition is what makes it so beautiful。 Definitely some wisdom to be gained from the stories in this book。 。。。more

Happy Comforting Photography Book。 This is a photography book containing photography from New Yorkers, I think in Manhattan。 If you’re aware of Humans of New York, this is a photography book of people。 Charming and sweet。

Fascinating stories of everyday people and their struggles。 Captivating photographs that might take your breath away。 There is beauty in the ordinary if you care to look。 My oldest son left this (physical) copy when he moved out。 It was required reading for a class he took。 I’m keeping it in my personal collection-I like it that much。

I really really loved this! I discovered this book after a few months of following the HONY instagram page and decided that I had to take a look at the book since I'm a huge fan of the project。This book gave me that feeling when you realize that every other person has a life filled with their own experiences as well as their own dreams。I love the photos included as well as the quotes of course, and that many of them lack context, which makes them even more interesting to read。 These little snipp I really really loved this! Jeg elsker å lese disse små historiene om folk i NY, i tillegg til å se på bildene som følger med。 Jeg både ler og griner om hverandre。 Kan noen lage det samme om innbyggere i Oslo? Om ikke det allerede finnes。

Some random thoughts on the book: > The sadness of some stories is underrated > The stories are snippets and it pissed me off in some of them, like I NEED MORE。 But, at the same time, I wouldn't change a thing about it。> A lot of stories felt familiar。。 and that is the beauty of HONY。 People you never met, that you can relate with。 Some random thoughts on the book: > The sadness of some stories is underrated > The stories are snippets and it pissed me off in some of them, like I NEED MORE。 But, at the same time, I wouldn't change a thing about it。> A lot of stories felt familiar。。 and that is the beauty of HONY。 People you never met, that you can relate with。 。。。more

I liked this one even better than the first。 I really enjoy the storytelling aspect of the Humans of New York blog, so this book was perfect for me。 I actually cried once reading a story。 It really got to me。 This whole book is stunning! Wish I could rate it more than 5 stars。

I really enjoyed this book。 What a cast of characters - real people on the streets of New York。 Heart warming, heart breaking, sometimes funny and sometimes absurd stories told by the people themselves。 As you would suspect, there are several celebrities as well that are interviewed, but never identified by name。

Lauren

I have really enjoyed reading snippets of this over the past year or so。

So many great stories that accompany wonderful photography of the people who populate NYC。 Many of the stories are very poignant with honest and raw responses elicited by the author。 It's a mixed bag of hopefulness, with endearing and sweet comments, while also showcasing folks who have experienced significant trauma and horror in their lives yet carry on。 I loved the kaleidoscope of people featured - a great commentary on the melting pot that is NYC and this book certainly features individuals So many great stories that accompany wonderful photography of the people who populate NYC。 Many of the stories are very poignant with honest and raw responses elicited by the author。 It's a mixed bag of hopefulness, with endearing and sweet comments, while also showcasing folks who have experienced significant trauma and horror in their lives yet carry on。 I loved the kaleidoscope of people featured - a great commentary on the melting pot that is NYC and this book certainly features individuals from all walks of life, ethnicities, backgrounds, etc。 It was a joy to read。 。。。more

Sometimes i feel like i hate people, alot of the times, that humanity in general is something that has plagued earth, that we did nothing but ruin this precious planet, and then i read books like this。 And i can’t help but feel love in my heart for humanity。 This book made me remember why i love walking in Enqelab square, to get lost between so many people each of them with their own lives and destinations。 Or why i sometimes cherish Tehran’s traffic, to see so many car head lights, and each one Sometimes i feel like i hate people, alot of the times, that humanity in general is something that has plagued earth, that we did nothing but ruin this precious planet, and then i read books like this。 And i can’t help but feel love in my heart for humanity。 This book made me remember why i love walking in Enqelab square, to get lost between so many people each of them with their own lives and destinations。 Or why i sometimes cherish Tehran’s traffic, to see so many car head lights, and each one of them have their own story。 “How rare and beautiful it is to even exist。” 。。。more

An interesting, heartwarming, thought-provoking read。 Full of stories from people from all walks of life, HONY dives into the lives of those walking the streets of NY— you get a good mix of one-liners, background information, and personal narratives that will remind you that you truly don’t know what might be weighing heavy on one’s mind— whether you know them or you’ve just passed them on the street。 Highly recommended。
